How important is it to fast in the month of Muharram?
Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallamA: Hazrat Abu Hurairah (Radiallahu ‘anhu) is reported to have said that the Messenger of Allah( ) said: “After Ramadan the most blessed fasts are the fasts of the month of Muharrah.”

Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallamA: Hazrat Ibn Abbas (Radiallahu ‘anhu) narrates that when the Messenger of Allah ( ) arrived in Madina, he observed the Jews fasting on ‘Ashura. He( ) asked them about that day. They replied that it is a very blessed day.
Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallamSall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam This was the day the Children of Israel were emancipated from their enemies. In order to thank Allah Ta’ala, Hazrat Musa (‘Alayhissalaam) kept a fast on this day. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah( )said, “I am more deserving of this than you.”
He( ) then kept a fast and commanded the people to do as well.
